Approximately 60% of all copper produced globally is used for electrical applications. Copper has the second-highest electrical conductivity of any metal (after silver), making it the standard for power transmission lines, building wiring, motor windings, transformers, and busbars. Its combination of high conductivity, ductility, corrosion resistance, and affordability makes it irreplaceable in modern power infrastructure — from residential wiring to high-voltage grid networks.
Copper is fundamental to the global energy transition. Wind turbines contain up to 4 tonnes of copper each in generators, transformers, and grounding cables. Solar farms use copper wiring extensively for DC and AC current transmission. Electric vehicles contain 3 to 4 times more copper than conventional cars — used in motors, batteries, charging infrastructure, and power electronics. Demand from clean energy and electrification is the single largest growth driver for copper through the next decade.
Copper has been used in construction for over 5,000 years. Its natural antimicrobial properties, longevity (lifespan of 50+ years), and resistance to corrosion make it ideal for water plumbing systems, heating and cooling pipes, gas lines, and roofing. Copper roofs and façades develop a distinctive green patina over time, providing both aesthetic appeal and additional surface protection. Modern green buildings increasingly specify copper for its recyclability and low environmental impact.
Copper is the backbone of the digital economy. It is used in printed circuit boards (PCBs), integrated circuit interconnects, heat sinks, connectors, and high-speed data cables. Data centers powering cloud computing and AI rely heavily on copper for both power distribution and high-bandwidth networking. The expansion of 5G networks, fiber-optic infrastructure, and edge computing facilities continues to drive demand for high-purity copper components in telecommunications worldwide.
